As usual, the United States are among the favorites to wear gold on the women’s side,
something they haven’t done since 2012. That being said, the new kids on the Olympic block in
Spain come in with plenty of momentum as they look for a positive showing in Paris. The
reigning Olympic champs in Canada had an extremely disappointing 2023, casting a dark cloud
on their hopes to repeat. And, although they automatically qualified as hosts, France is looking
to take care of business at home.
USA (+200)
Although they are the favorites to take the top spot on the podium, the United States sit in the
5th spot of the FIFA Women’s World Rankings. It’s the lowest position they’ve seen in the
rankings but a win here could change things before the year is up. There are questions
remaining on the squad as to whether or not Alex Morgan will make the cut but regardless if the
striker is on the pitch in Paris, the Americans always come ready to play.
Spain (+250)
La Roja qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 2024 which coincides with the squad
sitting in first position in the World Rankings. You can count on Spain looking to make a
statement on the world’s stage and to suit up a roster mixed with youth and a veteran presence.
Led by the team’s all-time leader in caps in Alexia Putellas and the squad’s all-time leader in
goals thanks to Jenni Hermoso, Spain will lean on them to move forward in the tournament.
France (+500)
Having failed to qualify for the 2020 games, France essentially lost an opportunity to grow as a
team and have some of their younger players experience best-on-best competition. Now back in
the Olympics, Les Bleues are in one of the tougher groups which will see them take on Canada,
Colombia and New Zealand in the group stage. Having never finished higher than 4th at the
Olympics, they are positioned at 2nd in the World Rankings and will definitely draw even more
attention playing on home soil this summer.
Canada (+2000)
It’s been a tumultuous time for the Canadians since winning gold at the Tokyo Games. With
plenty of steam heading into the most recent Women’s World Cup, but they failed to make it out
of the group stage for the first time since 2011. That led to the nation falling to the 10th position
in the World Rankings. Since then, they’ve lost two of their all-time greats. The greatest
international scorer among both men and women in Christine Sinclair who retired from the
national team in December. 2nd in national team caps, behind Sinclair, was midfielder Sophie
Schmidt who also hung up her national team cleats at the end of 2023.
That said, Canada is a nation of budding stars with the likes of Jordyn Huitema and Julia
Grosso, both just 23 years old but already with plenty of international experience. Most of the
players are coming from their club teams in the Women’s Super League and Serie A where they
train and play against the best in the world. As they say, iron sharpens iron and will have to be
plenty sharp if they look to repeat with gold around their necks.
