The 48th Copa America kicks off in the U.S. this week and Argentina, who are the reigning
champions, remains the team to beat. And when it comes to the Golden Boot, there’s no
surprise who is favored to take home that honor. But if you’re looking for some value, there are
others available not named Messi. Let’s breakdown who could win this, and others who could
be a sleeper pick.
Lionel Messi, Argentina +300
He is one of the greatest scorers of all-time and Lionel Messi has won this award before,
scoring four goals in 2021, tied with others for the tournament lead. He has 13 Copa goals and
needs five more in 2024 to become the all-time top scorer for this event. Here’s where Messi
has the edge. Argentina opens against Canada, the lowest ranked team in the group, which
means an opportunity to score a few goals. But if the defending champs are rolling in group
stage games, Messi could sit on the bench, resting for the knockout stage. Remember, he is
turning 37 later this month, so rest will be the key for his team to repeat.
Vinicius Jr., Brazil +400
Vinicius Junior had quite the season at Real Madrid winning both La Liga and Champions
League. He scored 15 goals in 25 matches in domestic games and six more during 10
Champions League matches. There’s no question he’s Brazil’s main offensive threat after the
loss of Neymar, who’s out with a knee injury. Brazil is expected to go deep in this tournament,
and Vinicius Jr. should hit the scoreboard often, but will it be enough to be top scorer at this
event.
Dark Horse Plays
Christian Pulisic, USA +2500
Christian Pulisic has been the face of American men’s soccer for a number of years and has
also scored vital goals for this country. The captain is the catalyst of this squad, and playing on
home soil, he could have a breakthrough. Obviously, the biggest challenge for him to win the
Golden Boot would require the U.S. to go deep in the tournament, and it’s something they could
accomplish as they are in an easier group, and all games will be at home. He scored 12 goals
for AC Milan this season and has 29 career goals for his country. But let’s face it, it’s highly unlikely. Pulisic is a MASSIVELY overrated player.
Luis Diaz, Colombia +3300
Luis Diaz could be the longshot everyone hopes wins this award. Three years ago, The
Colombian scored 4 goals, tied with Messi. He scored 8 goals with Liverpool this season, and
has a booming shot that can keep goalies on their heels. The 27-year old is exciting and if
Colombia can at least make it to the semi’s, he could be in the conversation again for top goal
scorer, and at this price, how can you not take a shot.
