The host nation is favored to win gold in both the men’s and women’s events. On both sides of
the draw there are world minnows, teams who are newer to the sport, and realistically, have
zero chance of winning gold, or even hitting the podium. But there are about four to five teams
capable of taking the top spot, and we’ll break down who could play spoilers at the Summer
Games.
Men’s Tournament
France +175
France won the 2024 European Championship and headed to the Olympics full of confidence.
The French beat Denmark, and Sweden, two of the best in the world. France has a good mix of
players and should be tough to beat. Luka Krabatic, is the one to watch, as the 36-year-old has
scored 55 goals in 69 international matches.
Denmark +185
Denmark is a handball powerhouse and have been at the top of the world rankings over the
past few years. The Danes have four Olympic gold medals but lost to France at the Tokyo
Games in the final. Denmark also lost to France at the Euro’s, so they could be looking for
revenge in enemy territory.
LONG SHOT
Norway (+2000)
At +2000, Norway could be a value play. They’re undefeated in six with five wins and a draw.
And that tie came against Denmark, one of the world powers. Norway also had a big win
against Sweden, so at this price, why the heck not.

Women’s Tournament
France -135
In 2016, France lost to Russia in the gold-medal match but defeated the Russians at the 2020
Games. After finishing a disappointing fourth at the 2022 European Championships, Les Bleues
were undefeated at the 2023 World Championships, a perfect 9-0 record. France is a
powerhouse and the home support makes them the overwhelming favorites.
Denmark +600
Denmark missed the last two Olympics and are ready to tangle against the best. They finished
third at the 2023 World Championships. Anne Mette Hansen has been a star for her country as
she’s scored an eye-popping 465 goals in 161 matches. If she’s on her game, Denmark could
reach the top of the podium.
LONG SHOT
Netherlands +1400
The Netherlands were fifth in Tokyo after finishing in the top-3 at three straight World
Championships, including winning it all in 2019. But they’ve struggled recently finishing a
disappointing sixth at the last two Euros. The Dutch are capable of big things but need a bit of
luck in the draw.
