USA Massive Favorites to 5-peat in Olympic Men’s Basketball

August 2, 2024

The stars will be on the hardcourt this summer in Paris for the 2024 edition of the

Summer Olympic Games. The Americans are looking to rebound from a disappointing

2023 Fiba World Cup, while contenders Serbia and Canada are looking to prove that

they belong with the world’s best when it comes to basketball. They are almost into the

knockout stage and it looks like it may be a battle for silver as the Americans look like

the team to beat.

USA (-800)

At -800 the Americans are the favorites to bring home the Gold in Paris. Some people

were a bit concerned following the United States 4th place finish at the 2023 FIBA

World Cup but let's be honest here, they sent the “B-Team” to that tournament. There

was no LeBron James, no Steph Curry and no Kevin Durant. These are the future Hall

of Famers who are projected to be on this Olympic squad. Despite being eligible to

compete for France, Joel Embiid knows where the Gold is going and has committed to

representing the USA in 2024. Heck, even Devin Booker has spoken out and said he’s

willing to be a role player on the roster. Avengers, assemble!

Canada (+850)

It’s been 40 years since the Canadians even sniffed a spot on the podium and they

haven’t qualified for the tournament in 24 years. But that could all change in Paris.

They took home a Bronze medal in a thrilling OT win over the Americans at last year’s

FIBA World Cup and that was without standout exports in Jamal Murray and Andrew

Wiggins. This is a workhorse nation that has been on the uptick in the sport for a while,

but at some point, you have to be about the present and not the future.

Serbia (+2000)

Serbia is coming off a Silver medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, made even more

impressive with the fact that their best player in Nikola Jokic was at home. Adding Jokic

into the mix definitely makes this squad one to watch this year as he’s proven to be a

player who can take over a game at the highest level. Their last appearance was in

2016 where they fell short of the gold thanks to the Americans. But what do you know,

they’re in the same group as the United States and will face them in their first contest of

these Olympic Games. It’s a shame these two teams aren’t in separate groups so that

we could only see them in knockout play to raise the stakes, but that’s just me getting

greedy.
