Astros (+100) Favored to win AL West in 2024

4 March 2024

The American League West has been dominated by one team in recent years. The Astros have won 6 of the last 7 division titles, the only blemish, the shortened COVID season in 2020. They are one of six teams who are projected to win at least 90 games. But are there others who can make a run? Let’s find out.

Houston Astros (+105)

The Astros hitting core is essentially the same as we saw in 2023. Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve all back for another run. Houston added Josh Hader as its closer

bolstering one of the better bullpens in 2023. The one big loss is Dusty Baker who retired after

four years as manager but this team is still a dynasty and a force to be reckoned with in the AL

Texas Rangers (+175)

Despite winning the World Series last season, The Rangers haven’t won the division since 2016. Texas had an explosive offense scoring the third-most runs in majors and led the

American League, just ahead of Houston.

But the Rangers will be without Jacob DeGrom, and Max Scherzer for part of the season due to

injuries. And same for shortstop Corey Seager who is coming off core surgery during the

Seattle Mariners (+275)

If you’re looking for better value, the Mariners may fit the bill. Seattle has one of the best

starting rotations in the majors and has budding superstar Julio Rodriguez. The M’s ended a

two decade playoff drought in 2022 and missed the postseason in 2023 by one game. A young

core, and some key acquisitions gives Seattle a great chance to not only make the playoffs but

take a serious run at the division.

Los Angeles Angels (+3300)

Even with Shohei Ohtani the Angels haven’t been good. It’s been almost a decade since they

were .500. Now that the superstar has left for the crosstown Dodges the outlook is even more

bleak. Mike Trout is back from injuries but expect the Angels to be near the bottom of the AL
