March Madness: The Greatest Time in College Basketball

Every March, college basketball takes over the sporting world with an event simply known as March Madness, a thrilling, high-stakes, single-elimination tournament where 68 of the best Division I teams compete for the NCAA national championship. The drama, unpredictability and sheer excitement make this one of the most beloved sporting events of the year.

What Is March Madness?

March Madness refers to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, a bracket-style competition that begins in mid-March and culminates with the Final Four and championship game in early April. The field starts with the “First Four” play-in games just after Selection Sunday, when all teams and seedings are revealed — and progresses through the Round of 64, Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four and ultimately the national title game.

This knockout format, combined with the massive national spotlight and millions of fans filling out bracket predictions, creates an electric mix of upsets, buzzer-beaters and unforgettable moments that define the “madness.”

Looking Ahead

March Madness officially kicks off with Selection Sunday on March 15, with games beginning March 17. The road to the Final Four in Indianapolis and the national championship on April 6 is already shaping up to be one of the most compelling in recent memory.
